Senator Janet Nguyen Successfully Leads Effort to Stop Sacramento City Council from Recognizing Delegation from Ho Chi Minh City

(Sacramento, CA) Following vocal opposition from the Vietnamese-American Community of California, Senator Janet Nguyen is proud to announce that the Sacramento City Council has cancelled its efforts to receive a delegation from Ho Chi Minh City during tonight's city council meeting. The cancellation came in the wake of protests from California's Vietnamese-American community.

Prior to the announcement of the cancellation, a rally was held outside of Sacramento City Hall where Vietnamese-American protesters joined Senator Nguyen in denouncing any official recognition or sister city relationship with Ho Chi Minh City.

"I want to thank the more than 150 Vietnamese-American community members who travelled from Orange County, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Jose, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Oakland and Stockton; some of whom had to start their journey as early as 1:00 a.m. This highlights their dedication to fighting for human rights, religious freedom and democracy for Vietnam and its people."

When Senator Nguyen arrived at the protest, representatives of Sacramento Vice Mayor Allen Warren's office directly informed Senator Nguyen that the recognition and meeting with the delegation from Ho Chi Minh City had been cancelled. News of the cancellation was welcomed with loud cheers by the hundreds of protesters. Subsequently, the Office of Mayor Warren provided Senator Nguyen with an email officially confirming the cancellation.

"It was inspiring to see such a strong and quick response from the Vietnamese-American community. This protest came together within forty-eight hours of learning of the delegation's visit," said Senator Nguyen. "There should be no recognition of any Vietnamese government delegation until the government protects human rights and releases all prisoners of conscience."

According to the Human Rights World Report of 2014, human rights in Vietnam continues to deteriorate, with more than 150 residents currently being held as political prisoners. In addition, the government continues to routinely suppress freedoms of expression and religion.

"As an important City in the United States and as the Capital of the Great State of California, Sacramento should not associate itself to any degree with a nation that is known for its brutal and oppressive tactics. Consequently, I want to thank the Sacramento City Council for listening to the concerns of the Vietnamese-American community of California and for canceling their planned recognition of the Ho Chi Minh City delegation," said Senator Janet Nguyen.

As an advocate for human rights, Senator Nguyen has opposed efforts by other California Cities to establish relationships with Vietnamese cities. She previously opposed similar efforts by the City of Irvine and the City of Riverside.

Hưởng ứng lời kêu gọi của Cộng Đồng Việt Nam ở Sacramento và được sự đồng tình ủng hộ của các Hội Đoàn Quốc Gia, Cộng Đồng Người Việt Quốc Gia Bắc California tổ chức đi tham dự cuộc biểu tình chống âm mưu kết nghĩa với cộng sản và tố cáo tội ác của cộng sản Việt Nam vào ngày Thứ Ba, 14 tháng 7 năm 2015 tại Toà Thị Chính Sacramento.

Mục đích của cuộc biểu tình là để nêu lên những dữ kiện thực tế cho thấy việc kết nghĩa với độc tài cộng sản - nếu có - là một nhầm lẫn tai hại đi ngược lại với quan điểm của tập thể người Mỹ gốc Việt, một hành động nhục mạ người dân tự do ở Sacramento và là một sự coi thường nền dân chủ Hoa Kỳ.
