1.- Tại Hoa Kỳ, Ông, Bà   Robert & Marilyn Funseth, 

hai nhà ngoại giao lảo thành của chính phủ Hoa Kỳ, 

là những vị ân nhân đặc biệt của những Tù Nhân Chính Trị Việt Nam Cộng Hòa... 

 

Bà   Marilyn  A. Funseth   vừa từ trần cách đây không lâu.   Hưởng thượng thọ 82 tuổi.

Hôm nay ngày Thứ Bảy, 21 tháng 3, 2015, 

một thánh lễ tưởng niệm đã được long trọng tổ chức tại một Nhà Thờ nổi tiếng tại Thủ đô HTĐ,

với sự tham dự   của   Ông Chủ tịch và Ban Chấp Hành Cộng Đồng Việt Nam vùng Washington, D.C., 

Maryland và Virginia, cùng với   một số cựu Quân, Cán, Cảnh Việt Nam Cộng Hòa. 

 

2.- Tại Úc Đại lợi, Ông   Malcolm Fraser,   vị Thủ tướng của Úc từ 11-1975 đến 3-1983, 

là một đại ân nhân của Cộng Đồng Người Việt Quốc Gia Tỵ Nạn cộng sản tại Úc sau 30-4-1975.

 

Ông vừa từ trần hôm qua 20-3-2015. Hưởng thượng thọ 84 tuổi..

MALCOLM Fraser, Australia’s 22nd prime minister from November 1975 to March 1983, has died at 84.

A statement issued by Mr Fraser’s office confirmed he had passed away earlier today.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that after a brief illness John Malcolm Fraser died peacefully in the early hours of the morning of 20 March 2015,” it said.

“We appreciate that this will be a shock to all who knew and loved him, but ask that the family be left in peace at this difficult time.”

Mr Fraser was born in May 1930 and entered politics at the age of 25, winning the Victorian seat of Wannon for the Liberal Party in 1955.

He became Liberal leader in March 1975 and was appointed caretaker prime minister on November 1975 11 after governor-general Sir John Kerr dismissed the Whitlam Labor government, and won a landslide election in December that year.

Mr Fraser won two subsequent elections before being defeated by Labor under Bob Hawke in 1983, retiring from politics shortly afterwards.

Mr Fraser completed a degree in politics, economics and philosophy at Oxford in 1952 and, after entering politics, was promoted to the ministry under Prime Minister Harold Holt in 1966 as minister for the army (1966-68).

He went on to serve as minister for education and science (1968-69) and 1971-72) and minister for defence (1969-71) during the governments of John Gorton and William McMahon.

Mr Fraser resigned from the Defence portfolio in early 1971, accusing then prime minister Mr Gorton of disloyalty and setting in motion the successful challenge by Mr McMahon for the leadership.

In recent years Mr Fraser became disenchanted with the modern Liberal Party, cancelling his membership in December 2009 shortly after Malcolm Turnbull was dumped as opposition leader in favour of Tony Abbott.

Mr Fraser was married to Tamie Fraser and they have four children.

Tributes flowed for Mr Fraser from all sides of politics.

Treasurer Joe Hockey passed on his condolences to Mr Fraser’s family, saying his death reminded those in public life “we all stand on the shoulders of those that were before us”.

“Many people have contributed to public life over a long period of time that have helped to build a better Australia and unquestionably he was one of them,” Mr Hockey said.

NSW federal Liberal MP Phillip Ruddock, who served in the Fraser government, tweeted: “RIP Malcolm Fraser. A man who guided the country out of one of its most difficult periods.’’

Education Minister Christopher Pyne said: “Vale Malcolm Fraser. A life dedicated to the service of our country. We will be poorer without him. Thoughts are with his family.”

The incoming president of the Victorian Liberal Party Michael Kroger said Mr Fraser’s passing was a “sad day for Tamie, his family and the country’’.

Mr Kroger praised Mr Fraser as the man who saved the Australian economy by blocking supply in 1975 and defeating the Whitlam government.

He said Mr Fraser had tried to be fiscally responsible, had opposed the introduction of Capital Gains Tax and had introduced amendments to the Trade Practices Act that outlawed secondary boycotts.

South Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young tweeted: “Mr Fraser a politician of principle and leader of compassion. A true gentleman with a heart full of empathy. I am devastated.’’

Labor MP Doug Cameron was shocked to hear of Mr Fraser’s death, having only recently dined with the former prime minister and his wife Tamie.

“I am just devastated that Australia has lost a great voice for human rights,” Senator Cameron told reporters in Canberra.

Assistant Education Minister Simon Birmingham tweeted: “Though many disagreed with him at different times #MalcolmFraser was a man of conviction & compassion who gave much to public life - vale.’’

MARILYN FUNSETH 

(Age 82)  

A Foreign Service spouse and former State Department Aide died February 27, 2015 at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington of respiratory failure. She is survived by her husband Robert of 58 years (married March 23, 1957), a 40-year career Foreign Service Officer. Robert was Spokesman of the State Department during the tenure of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. She was predeceased by her only child, a son, Eric Christian Funseth, who died in 1984 at 23 years.

Mrs. Funseth was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 8, 1933. She is a graduate of the Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas, attended Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Her first position at the State Department was in the Operations Center followed by an assignment as an Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State, Ambassador Loy W. Henderson.

The Funseth's first post was at the American Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. They also served at the Consulate General in Bordeaux, France and at the Embassy in Ottawa, Canada. As a Foreign Service Officer spouse, Mrs. Funseth served and represented our country with distinction and dignity.

Mrs. Funseth is also survived by cousins Martha Moody (John) and John C. Estes; in-laws Denis and Linda Funseth and Helen Schuelke; nieces Sarah Baran (Todd) and Mary Demler (Kevin); nephews John Funseth (Lisa), Karl Funseth (Elizabeth), Richard Schuelke, David Schuelke (Mary) and Guy Schuelke (Paula).

Mrs. Funseth was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Lafayette Square, DACOR (Diplomat and Consular Officers Retired), and the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Lafayette Square, Washington, DC, on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. In Marilyn's honor, contributions may be made in her name to St. John's Church, 1525 H Street, N.W., Washington, DC 2005-1098 or to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 3803 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 2003, or a      .   .

Nữ Ân Nhân của Tù Nhân Chính Trị Việt-nam vừa qua đời

Marilyn Funseth  , một người kiên trì ủng hộ các tù nhân chính trị Việt Nam và gia đình của họ đã qua đời vào ngày 27 Tháng Hai 2015 vì bệnh viêm phổi. Chồng của bà, ông Robert Funseth là nhà đàm phán Mỹ đóng vai chính; trong việc tìm kiếm sự phóng-thích và tái định cư của hơn 100.000 tù nhân chính trị và gia-đình của họ. Trong nhiều trường hợp các tù nhân chính trị ca ngợi ông Funseth là anh hùng của họ.

Bà Khúc Minh Thơ,  Chủ tịch của Hội Gia Đình Tù Nhân Chính Trị Việt Nam (FVPPA) tuyên bố rằng người vợ của ông, Marilyn cũng là "nữ anh hùng" của chúng tôi.

Bà Funseth sẽ mãi mãi được nhớ đến như là người gửi tin tốt lành rằng: chồng bà đã thành công trong việc đạt được thỏa thuận; để phóng-thích các tù nhân chính trị.  Ông đã điện thoại cho vợ từ Bangkok, ngay khi vừa trở về từ Hà Nội; để thông báo cho bà Khúc Minh Thơ biết rằng một thỏa thuận đã được thực hiện.

Bà Funseth cũng sẽ được ghi nhớ về các câu thơ bà đã viết về người tị nạn; mà ông Funseth có đọc trong diễn-văn của mình trong “Thank You America Day”: Ngày Đại-Hội Cảm Ơn Nhân Dân Hoa-Kỳ của các tù nhân chính trị đã tập-họp khỏang gần 2,000 người ở Houston, TX (Ngày 25/7/1999 tại Nhà Hàng Phú Kim) trích thơ và dịch:

 

“Và một ngày người đến nơi đây

Mang mang hy vọng hòa nước mắt,

Tim người dồn dập nỗi quê say,

Miền đất hứa rộngngớp trời mây”

Bà đã tham gia nhiều sinh-hoạt của Hội Gia Đình Tù Nhân Chính Trị Việt Nam (FVPPA) cùng với chồng để tăng thêm hỗ trợ tinh thần.

Buoi lễ cho bà Funseth sẽ được tổ chức vào ngày thứ Bảy 21 Tháng 3, 2015 vào lúc 11:00 AM tại Nhà thờ - di tích lịch sử: St. John ở Lafayette Square, biệt danh là "Nhà Thờ của Tổng Thống"

Đóng góp để vinh danh bà có thể được thực hiện qua "Quỹ Tưởng niệm Marilyn Funseth". Tại St. John Church, 1525 “H” Street, N.W. Lafayette Square, Washington, DC 20005
