Kính thưa Quý Đồng Hương,
Tôi lấy làm hân hạnh và vinh dự chia sẻ đến quý vị tin vui đầu
năm, vào 10 giờ sáng thứ Sáu ngày 20 tháng 2 năm 2015, tức Mùng Hai Tết Ất Mùi,
Hội Đồng Thành Phố Westminster, cùng với quý vị đại diện cộng đồng, các tổ chức
đấu tranh, và một số đồng hương đã chính thức làm lễ khánh thành 2 tấm bảng tên
"Saigon" gắn trên trụ điện giao thông trên đại lộ Bolsa, để thay thế
cho 2 tấm bảng treo lâu nay là "Asian Garden" và "Cultural
Court". Hai tấm bảng "Saigon" này, một bên chỉ vào khu thương
mại Phước Lộc Thọ, một bên chỉ vào khu chợ Á Đông, thuộc vùng thủ độ tỵ nạn

The smell of
jackfruit hangs in the air and shoppers crowd the bright flower stalls that
seem to blossom along the streets of Little Saigon in the final days before the
Lunar New Year.
But there's a new
buzz in the immigrant community this season.
At the direction of
the city's first Vietnamese American mayor, some of the lime-green street signs
in the heart of Little Saigon are being replaced with new ones that will read
simply "Saigon," a tribute to the fallen capital that many here fled
four decades ago.
But Mayor Tri Ta said both the memory and spirit of the onetime capital of South Vietnam live on in his central Orange County city.The ethnic district that grew in Westminster, and later spread to surrounding cities, is the capital for overseas Vietnamese, and residents said the signs will underscore their efforts to re-create what they lost when the war in Vietnam ended. After communist forces claimed power, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.
"I am so happy — and so proud," says Hoang Vo, a former Boeing assembly line worker, browsing for trinkets in a stall decorated with silk lanterns. "This place has turned into a new homeland for those living overseas."
The new street
signs will be erected in the coming days at the Asian Garden Mall and the
Cultural Court shopping center, as the community prepares for the 40th
anniversary of the fall of Saigon. For many Vietnamese Americans, April 30
remains a somber date, observed but not celebrated.

But with Tet ceremonies scheduled this
week, Little Saigon is in a festive mood. Shoppers scoop up armloads of scarlet
orchids from the open-air flower markets and workers unload cartons of papaya
and grapefruit. Vendors hawk bamboo pillows, lottery games and painted
porcelain cats with swinging arms, next to a booth decked out with
"Guardian Buddha" beads.
Thanh Huyen, a
vendor selling red envelopes that will be filled with "lucky" money
and exchanged among friends and business associates, said the new street signs
would add to Little Saigon's community pride.
"You know, we
now have a Vietnamese senator, we have council members who are
Vietnamese," she added. "We also have Vietnamese mayors and a
supervisor who is Vietnamese. The Vietnamese name for a street is
inevitable."
Xuan Nguyen, a New
Jersey resident visiting Orange County with her children and partner, said the
signs would be a welcome addition to a community that attracts Vietnamese
visitors from around the world.
"It really
identifies this as a Vietnamese area," she said.

WESTMINSTER The Asian Garden Mall and the
Cultural Court shopping center that flank Bolsa Avenue have long
represented the heart of Orange County’s Vietnamese community.
Soon, motorists turning into either will
end up in Saigon.
At least according to the lighted, overhead
street signs.
Westminster is changing the green street
signs that now say “Asian Garden” and “Cultural Court” to “Saigon.”
The two monument signs in the district –
at Bolsa Avenue and Magnolia Street on the west end and
at Bolsa Avenue and Ward Street on the east end – will still say,
“Little Saigon.”
The switch is to commemorate the
40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and celebrate the Vietnamese
community’s success since then.
“We want to honor the sacrifices of the
millions of South Vietnamese and 58,000 Americans who lost their lives
defending freedom,” said Mayor Tri Ta, who along with Councilman
Tyler Diep sought the changes.
The mayor added that the signs will better
alert people visiting from outside the community that they are in Little
Saigon: “People who drive by will instantly recognize Little Saigon, so it
promotes tourism.”
Saigon was the capital of the Republic of
South Vietnam during the civil war, which pitted the south and American forces
against the communist north, until the end of the war in 1975. Saigon is now Ho
Chi Minh City.
Replacing the two signs will cost $2,400.
Ta and Diep have led afundraising campaign so there is no cost
to taxpayers. The signs are expected to be installed within a month.
Last week, when the new signs were
approved, many Vietnamese Americans told the City Council about the symbolic
power of swapping out the old signs with the new ones boasting the name of
their fallen capital.
“Saigon is always on our hearts and minds,”
said Leslie Le, former president of the Vietnamese Community of Southern
California. “So this initiative is welcomed by all of us.”
